L2 Accentedness and Language Self-Esteem in Foreign Language Learning

Accentedness is associated with listeners’ evaluative judgements, which might affect an L2 speaker’s construction of image about linguistic self-worth and competence, described as language (L2) self-esteem. This line inquiry pursued in the study presented this paper, investigates relationship between self-esteem extent to a learner’s pronunciation differs from listener’s representation it – accentedness. The results show that level correlates accentedness, direction correlation negative (r = -.51). findings also reveal levels participants whose accentedness closer native-like are significantly higher than those individuals strongly accented speech.
